# Cost price

Update the cost per item that Shopify uses for profit reporting.

**Cost price** is the per-unit cost recorded on each variant (the *Cost per item* field in Shopify). Customers never see it. It is used for profit and margin reports.

## Edit methods

| Edit method                                        | Result                      |
| -------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------- |
| Decrease by percentage (default)                   | cost − *n*%                 |
| Increase by percentage                             | cost + *n*%                 |
| Set to fixed value | the value you enter |
| Decrease by amount                                 | cost − *n*                  |
| Increase by amount                                 | cost + *n*                  |
| Set the cost price to the current price | copies the selling price |
| Set as percentage of price                         | price × *n*%                |
| Set the cost price to the current compare-at price | copies the compare-at price |
| Set as percentage of compare at price              | compare-at × *n*%           |
| Set as percentage of cost price                    | cost × *n*%                 |
| Set to null/blank                                  | clears the cost             |

Every method except the two *Set the cost price to the current …* options and **Set to null/blank** has a **Rounding** rule. See [Rounding rules](/bulk-price-editor-sami/field-guides/rounding-rules.md).

{% hint style="info" %}
**Example.** You want cost to be 60% of the selling price: choose **Set as percentage of price** and enter `60`. A variant priced 50.00 gets a cost of 30.00.
{% endhint %}

Cost price is a variant field, so you can restrict the change with **Apply to variants**. Reverting the task restores the previous cost values.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.samita.io/bulk-price-editor-sami/field-guides/cost-price.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
