# Product options and variants

Rename options, change option values, create options, remove options and manage variants in bulk.

Shopify products have up to three options (for example Size, Color, Material), each with values. These fields change them in bulk.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Changing options can create or delete variants. Read the notes below and check the preview before saving.
{% endhint %}

## Option name 1, 2, 3 (product fields)

Renames the option that sits in position 1, 2 or 3 of each product. Edit method: **Set option name**. Type the new name, for example `Colour`.

## Edit existing option (product field)

Renames an option by its current name instead of its position. Edit method: **Rename option**. Enter **Option name to update** (for example `Color`) and **New option name** (for example `Colour`). Products that do not have an option with that exact name are skipped.

## Option value 1, 2, 3 (variant fields)

Changes the *value* of the option in position 1, 2 or 3 on each variant. Edit methods: **Add text at end** (default), **Remove from end**, **Add text at beginning**, **Remove from beginning**, **Find and replace**. Dynamic variables are supported.

Example: **Find and replace** `Grey` with `Gray` on **Option value 2** renames the colour on every variant.

## Create new option (product field)

Adds a brand-new option to matching products.

| Input                        | Notes                                                                                                                                                                                                                       |
| ---------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Option name** | Only for options that do not exist yet, for example `Material`. |
| **Option values** | One value per line, or separated by commas, for example `Cotton, Silk, Wool`. |
| **Display order (optional)** | 1, 2 or 3. Leave empty to place the option last. |
| **How to handle variants** | **Leave as is (recommended)**: keeps the current variants; every existing variant receives the first value in your list. **Create variants**: builds a variant for every combination of current options and the new values. |

Shopify allows at most 2048 variants per product. With **Create variants**, products that would exceed the limit are skipped.

## Remove product options (product field)

Removes one or more option positions from matching products.

* **Option positions to remove**: tick Option 1, Option 2 and/or Option 3.
* **Removal behavior**: **Safe removal** only removes an option when Shopify can keep every existing variant without conflicts. **Resolve duplicate variants** removes conflicting duplicate variants and keeps the variant with the lowest position.

This edit can permanently delete variants and **cannot be reverted**. Scheduling as recurring is not available for it.

## Delete variants by option value

See [Delete products and variants](/bulk-price-editor-sami/field-guides/delete-products.md).

## Preview

For option fields the preview lists the product options or the affected variants so you can verify the effect before saving.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.samita.io/bulk-price-editor-sami/field-guides/product-options.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
