# SKU and barcode

Bulk edit variant SKUs and barcodes with find and replace, prefixes, suffixes or dynamic variables.

**SKU** and **Barcode** are variant fields. They use the text edit methods plus **Set to null/blank**.

## Edit methods

| Edit method                       | Inputs                    |
| --------------------------------- | ------------------------- |
| **Replace entire text** (default) | Value |
| Find and replace | Find value, Replace value |
| Add text at beginning | Value |
| Add text at end | Value |
| Remove from beginning             | Value                     |
| Remove from end                   | Value                     |
| Remove up to (and including) word | Value |
| Remove from word to end | Value |
| **Set to null/blank** | none, clears the field |

See [Title, handle, vendor, type and SEO](/bulk-price-editor-sami/field-guides/text-fields.md) for how each text method behaves.

## Build SKUs from other fields

All inputs accept [dynamic variables](/bulk-price-editor-sami/field-guides/dynamic-variables.md), which is the easiest way to generate unique SKUs:

* **Replace entire text** with `{{ product.vendor | upcase }}-{{ variant.id }}` gives, for example, `SAMIAPPAREL-4512345`.
* **Add text at beginning** with `{{ product.type | upcase }}-` prefixes every SKU with the product type.

## Warnings

The card shows a warning that the update may create **duplicate SKUs** or **duplicate barcodes** across variants. Duplicates can break inventory tracking, reporting, scanning and third-party integrations. Check the preview carefully, and prefer values that include `{{ variant.id }}` or `{{ variant.sku }}` when you need uniqueness.

Use **Apply to variants** with **SKU is empty** to fill in only the variants that have no SKU yet.

Reverting the task restores the previous SKU or barcode of each variant.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.samita.io/bulk-price-editor-sami/field-guides/sku-and-barcode.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
