# Permissions and data

What Countdown Timer Bar Samita can access on your store, and why each permission is needed.

When you install Countdown Timer Bar Samita, Shopify asks you to approve a set of permissions. This page explains what each one is for, in plain language.

## Products

The app reads your products — and, through the storefront, their inventory, listings, and tags.

It needs this to:

* Show you a product and variant picker when you set [display conditions](/samita-countdown-timer-bar/where-countdowns-appear/conditions.md).
* Read the inventory figure a [stock countdown](/samita-countdown-timer-bar/stock-countdown/inventory.md) reports.
* Match product-based conditions on the storefront.

## Themes

The app reads and writes a small amount of theme data in order to install, update, and report the status of its [app embed](/samita-countdown-timer-bar/quick-start/enable-app-embed.md) and app blocks — the mechanism that renders countdowns on your storefront.

This is also what lets the [Theme integration](https://github.com/samita-baoan/doc-timer/tree/restructure/docs-v2/settings/theme-integration.md) page tell you whether the embed is active on each of your themes.

## Files

The app reads and writes files so you can upload images and have them stored on your store: countdown backgrounds, sale popup images, and the icons used on a delivery date's progress bar.

## Storefront languages

The app reads your store's published languages so the builder can offer them in its language switcher, which is how [translated countdown text](/samita-countdown-timer-bar/design-and-translation/translate.md) works. Publish a new language in Shopify and it appears in the app on its own.

## Markets

The app reads your Markets configuration to resolve the country and language context a shopper is browsing in, which the **Country** and **Language** [conditions](/samita-countdown-timer-bar/where-countdowns-appear/conditions.md) match against.

## What the app reads on the storefront

Some of what a countdown needs isn't fetched from Shopify's admin at all — it's read from the page the shopper has already loaded:

| Read from the page | Used for |
| ---------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| Page type | The **Page** condition |
| Storefront language | The **Language** condition and translated text |
| Signed-in customer, including tags | The **Customer** and **Customer tag** conditions |
| Cart contents | Showing a cart countdown only when the cart has items |

## Country detection

The **Country** condition and the `{country_name}` and `{country_flag}` variables rely on looking up the shopper's IP address to determine their country. This is a geolocation lookup at the moment they browse — it isn't read from a saved address, and a VPN or proxy changes the result.

## What the app does not do

* It does not read or modify your orders.
* It does not change prices, inventory, or product availability.
* It does not create, cancel, or alter anything at checkout.
* It does not edit your theme's templates. App blocks are added and removed by you in the theme editor, and the optional template file for collection conditions is one you add yourself.

## Data the app stores

The app stores the countdowns and sale popups you create — their text, timing, conditions, and design — along with images you upload and your app language preference.

On the shopper's side, the only thing stored in their browser is what a [Fixed minutes](/samita-countdown-timer-bar/countdown-timer/fixed-minutes.md) timer needs to keep counting across page views. Clearing cookies removes it.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.samita.io/samita-countdown-timer-bar/reference/permissions-and-data.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
